Healthcare support workers are an appropriate way to free registerd nurses for more complex tasks in hospital?

This is great!! your views count xHealthcare support workers are an appropriate way to free registerd nurses for more complex tasks in hospital?
Not necessarily... and yes. There is no need for an RN or LVN to do EKG's, splints, wound irrigations, V/S, wheelchair discharges, on and on. So, yes, if it can be done without compromise, a tech or aid is perfect. If it's delegated, so an RN can be overwhelmed with more RN work no!!!!!! It's not so much the 'tasks' as it is acuity of patients that the RN is caring for at the time.
I was a support worker and know i used to do things I was unqualified to do. I used to change catheters, attach CTG monitors etc.But now I'm a student midwife, i know how invaluable the Healthcare support worker can be.
Unfortunately with the current financial crisis in the NHS more support workers are being used as a cheap alternative to nurses, midwives and even doctors. But used in the right circumstances and with the right training and financial rewards then yes, support workers rock!!
