I gained 50 pounds from 16 months of being on prozac and paxil. I stopped taking the paxil in the fall and just stopped taking the prozac a month ago, because no amount of dieting or exercise would take the weight off. For those of you who gained weight on SSRIs, how long did it take for you to get the weight off after stopping the meds? Its been a month and haven't been able to dropped more than 2 pounds so far. I've been hitting the gym and making sure that at least half of what I eat is fruit or vegetable each day.
The withdrawal symptom have been bad: insomnia, upset stomach, headaches, lethargy, shakiness etc..I'd feel at least a bit better if the weight seriously started coming off.
Please do not answer this question unless you have actually been on an SSRI yourself.Fighting and defeating SSRI weight gain?
I gained about 100 pounds after being on Paxil for a few years. ( I was pretty thin before I started). For a while, I was gaining like 15 lbs a month. The sad thing is that I was too doped up on it to realize I needed to stop. I've never been able to get back to my old weight. Its sooo hard when you gain so much so fast. Not to mention...very depressing.
Some meds don't cause weight gain. I didn't gain any on Lexapro. Wellbutrin may actually cut your appetite. I'm not sure of exactly what your diagnosis is, but Topamax also causes weight loss. If you are still in need of something, these could work in your favor.
Yes weight gain is a bad side effect. Probably more so from the Prozac. I don't know of a silver bullet to share with you to help. Since you've only been off for a month I'd just suggest keeping up the diet and exercise. I've experienced the same withdrawl which is very intense but should improve with time. Best of luck.
